Scuba Sets - Types
There are a lot of things to know and learn in Scuba Sets alone. You need to understand the features of the apparatus that will enable you to breathe underwater. As a first step, it is important to know the types of Scuba Sets and how they are used.
In general, there are two types of Scuba Sets: open - circuit and closed circuit.
- Open - circuit
This is a very simple, cheap, and portable type of Scuba Set. It employs an uncomplicated mechanism - when the Diver breathes out, the gas is not reprocessed or recycled at all. The exhaled air goes out to the surrounding water. This is widely-used by Divers, especially in Recreational Diving.
One disadvantage of using this type is that since no gas is reprocessed to be used again, you cannot go on long and deep dives without carrying enough Diving Cylinders. This will make you heavy and affect your Buoyancy as you use up your supply of breathing gas.
- Closed - circuit
Also called a Rebreather, this type converts exhaled air to a gas that the Diver can breathe again. There is total re-circulation and reprocessing of gas supplied to the Diver.
This is used in long and deep dives. However, its complicated mechanism makes it expensive and complex to use. This is definitely not used by beginners.
When you undergo basic Scuba Diving Training, you will get to know more about Scuba Sets. Open-circuit and closed-circuit are two completely different things. It is very crucial to learn the proper use and maintenance of any of the two types.
