Scuba Sets - Diving Cylinders
This is the most evident component of a Scuba Set. Also called a Scuba Cylinder, a Diving Cylinder contains the breathing gas needed in dives. They come in varying sizes and lengths.
They are usually made of either steel or aluminum. Scuba Cylinders made of aluminum are more prone to damage through abrasion. On the other hand, steel Diving Cylinders have good Buoyancy properties and less prone to damage caused by abrasion. It is important to inspect all Diving Cylinders regularly for any damage and corrosion.
Parts
Get familiar with the different parts of a Diving Cylinder:
- Pillar valve
This is the portion at which the Regulator is attached to the Diving Cylinder. It creates a seal with the Diving Regulator. This also regulates the amount of breathing gas to and from the Diving Cylinder.
- Y Pillar valve
This valve has two outputs and valves which makes it possible for two Regulators connected to the Diving Cylinder. This is useful when one Regulator fails. Its valve can be closed and the other Regulator can be used.
- O - Ring
It creates a seal between the Pillar valve and the Regulator.
How to Take Care of Scuba Cylinders
Take the necessary precautions when it comes to the Diving Cylinders that you will use. Take the following into consideration:
- Regular visual and hydrostatic testing and checking of Scuba Cylinders is a must.
- Scuba Cylinders should be handled properly. Make sure they are secured in case you need to transport them.
- Keep in mind to rinse the outside of the cylinder with fresh water to wash away residues of salt water.
- Keep Scuba Cylinders away from strong heat.
Know the Scuba Cylinders inside and out. The material they are made of and how they are maintained will affect your dive.
