Oxygen Administration
Also called Oxygen First Aid, Oxygen Administration is a treatment done to increase the oxygen supply. This is essential not only in Diving but also in other medical emergencies such as heart attack, carbon monoxide poisoning, and situations related to diabetes.
These are main devices used in Oxygen Administration:
- Simple Face Mask (SFM)
With an oxygen concentration of approximately 40-60%, this basic mask delivers 6-10 lpm of oxygen. This is usually used when there are minor hemorrhages and chest pain.
- Non-rebreather mask (NRB)
This device delivers around 8-15 lpm of oxygen. It comes with a reservoir bag which allows oxygen fills in between breaths. This is commonly used on conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning, smoke inhalation, and multiple trauma injuries.
- Big Valve Mask (BVM)
This device is slightly more complex than the NRB. A valve mask has a central cylinder-like bag which comes with an oxygen reservoir bag. To use this, squeeze the central bag to deliver oxygen to the patient. BVM is set to 8-15 lpm of close to 100% concentration oxygen.
It should be noted that you must be knowledgeable in Oxygen Administration before you perform this to a patient.
