Baby Thornback Rays Attract Visitors

MONDAY, 25 FEBRUARY 2008

The visitors at the Blue Reef Aquarium at Southsea, Hampshire, in the UK were amazed at the resemblance of a baby thornback ray to The Last Human creature popularized in a UK television show "The Last Human". Its strange "smile" and almost transparent body made him appear to be alien-like.

As part of a captive breeding program of the aquarium, the baby rays are first being taken cared for at a special nursery tank. They will soon join the adult thornbacks and the other sharks in a large pool.

Divers usually encounter thornbacks in coastal waters of Europe and the Atlantic coast of Africa, and as far south as Namibia and South Africa.
