NOAA Supports Science Expedition to Caribbean Reef
TUESDAY, 29 JANUARY 2008
As part of the International Year of the Reef, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) sponsored an expedition that investigates on the shallow and deep coral ecosystems off the Caribbean island of Bonaire, which is part of the Netherland Antilles.
The expedition is one of the first in the International Year of the Reef 2008, a year-long worldwide campaign highlighting the importance of coral reef ecosystems and motivating people to protect them. It runs through January 30.
Multiple underwater robots and divers are surveying the most pristine coral reefs in the Caribbean to answer why such reefs remain healthy while others around them are threatened.
