The Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary in American Samoa is being considered to be one of the 14 United States sites for the UNESCO World Heritage Listing.
According to Allamanda Amituanai, sanctuary education coordinator, the sanctuary is a reef marine ecosystem which deserves recognition. It comprises a coral reef ecosystem supported in an eroded volcanic crater on the island of Tutuila, American Samoa.
Being a tropical reef ecosystem, it is also filled with various tropical fish like parrot fish, damselfish and butterfly fish. It contains species native to the Indo-Pacific biogeographic region.
The UNESCO World Heritage Listing recognizes important cultural and natural sites in the world.
