Thistlegorm Wreck Re-opens for Diving
WEDNESDAY, 19 DECEMBER 2007
After installing a dive boat mooring system and drilling an air-escape holes in the Red Sea wreck of the ss Thistlegorm, The Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) opened the wreck again for diving.
The HEPCA placed 32 mooring lines and air-escape outlets to prevent more damage to the Thistlegorm's structure.
Volunteer divers from the Red Sea community, some diving operators and Red Sea Explorers helped in the re-opening of the Thistlegorm.
Meanwhile, the HEPCA is planning to drill more air-escape outlets but it will not hinder diving opportunities to the Thistlegorm.
The Rosalie Moller and other threatened wrecks are also planned to be saved as part of the Saving the Red Sea Wrecks Campaign launched by HEPCA October at the DIVE 2007 show at Birmingham.
