Divers Set Record for Longest Cave Passage
WEDNESDAY, 26 DECEMBER 2007
Florida Divers Jarrod Jablonski and Casey McKinlay swam through 7 miles of underground freshwater cave, creating the record for the longest cave passage.
Jablonski and McKinlay started at the small cave entrance of Turner Sink on December 15 and resurfaced at Wakulla Springs State Park near Tallahassee, Florida, the next day.
It took them both over 6 hours to complete the dangerous two-entrance cave trek and over 14 additional hours to decompress before surfacing.
The trek involved passages as tight as ten feet by ten feet and caverns large enough to fit buildings.
The two hoped to explore the south of the cave system with the Gulf of Mexico some 8.5 miles away.
