Aside from teaching scuba diving, instructor Sid Bingham is also teaching his students to protect coral reefs.
"I'd like to think that some of these kids will grow up to be marine biologists and start helping us take care of our oceans." Bingham said. Fourteen young divers participated during the first Lakeland Parks and Recreation Club Splash Dive Week held at Gandy Pool. Pool sessions and classroom instruction were part of the dive week, as well as diving at Lake Denton in Avon Park and at Weeki Wachee Springs.
Bingham also talked about coral reefs. "The beautiful coral reefs that we have in Florida and the rest of the Caribbean are something that are on the decline because we haven't taken care of them at this point." Half of his students have qualified for the Professional Association of Diving Instructors Open Water Diver certification.
