Teen Scuba Divers Join Deep Climb
MONDAY, 30 JULY 2007
Scientists from the Tampa Bay area will be diving 6,000 feet at Mauna Kea on Hawaii’s Big Island for the Operation: Deep Climb in October.
Joining the team of scientists are teen scuba divers, who are members of SCUBAnauts International. SCUBAnauts International is a science organization comprised of 12-to 18-year-olds. "The whole idea here is to inspire a new generation of 21st century explorers and promote scientific understanding of the universe and marine environment," said U.S. Navy Dave Olson, one of the founders of SCUBAnauts International.
Leading the Operation: Deep Climb is Dr. Chris Moses of the Institute for Marine Remote Sensing at University of South Florida’s College of Marine Science, who will be joined by scientists from the Florida Fish and Widlife Conservation Commission and College of Marine Science. Gathered data will be used for different applications, such as validation of satellite imagery. The project is a three-phase expedition that is a partnership among SCUBAnauts, the Explorer's Club, NASA, NOAA, the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory and the U.S. Air Force.
