Florida - James Gilkinson, 58, from Venice died Wednesday morning while on a scuba diving trip with his family. Gilkinson died at Cudgoe Key during the start of the two-day lobster mini-season.
According to Monroe County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jim Wirth, Gilkinson signaled his son that he was going to ascent while he was about 10 feet below the water surface. Gilkinson's wife reported that hew was struggling when he surfaced. Firefighter paramedics and a Florida Fish and Wildlife officer performed CPR after Gilkinson's wife called for help.
Gilkinson was brought to the Lower Keys Hospital by ambulance but was pronounced dead on arrival. An autopsy will be performed to know the cause of death, according to MSO spokeswoman Becky Herrin.
