Corals Damaged by Typhoons in Sarangani Bay
MONDAY, 30 OCTOBER 2006
Typhoons that hit the Philippines this year damaged coral reefs in some areas of Sarangani Bay and Celebes Sea. The typhoons caused strong waves that damage the corals.
More than 400 table corals were turned upside down by the storms in Kamanga offshore reef which is near Maasim town in Sarangani province. According to Chris Dearne, spokesperson of Sarangani Bay Divers, the damage created by the typhoon to the corals can still be repaired.
Chris Dearne together with his American friend John Heitz, also a member of Sarangani Bay Divers had been leading efforts by private groups to conserve the marine environment by dropping artificial reef domes along the coastal waters of Saranggani Bay. Accoring to www.sunstar.com.ph, it was in April of 2005 when the Sarangani Bay Divers started the project and has since submerged 2,990 artificial reef domes.
