Another diver was attacked by a stingray while diving at about 10 meters below the surface in Okiwi Bay and was able to escape with just three stitches and a hole in his wetsuit.
The attack of the stingray to Joe McKnight happened on Saturday. According to the Nelson Mail, McKnight felt a stab on his leg and looked down to see the one meter-wide stingray attached to him. The stingray remained attached for five seconds and there was a squirt of blood when it was pulled away.
The victim made his way to the surface and called for help. He was flown to the Nelson Hospital and was discharged two hours later.
The latest death caused by a stingray was that of Crocodile Hunter’s Steve Irwin.
