Balmorhea State Park Offers Unique Diving

If you think that Texas would be the last place you’d probably go diving because of its cactuses and rocks, think again. Located in Balmorhea, Texas, the 45.9 acre Balmorhea State Park offers a unique diving experience with its 77,053 square ft pool filled by San Solomon Springs.

The springs fill a desert wetland and the canals of a refugium which is home to endangered species of fish, assorted invertebrates and turtles. Although it is only a pool, it differs from other pools in that its size is over 1 ¾ acre, its depth is 25 feet and the temperature ranges from 72 to 76. Likewise, the pool has a variety of aquatic life in its clear waters. The pool has plenty of room for swimmers while at the same time, offers a unique setting for scuba and skin diving.

The park offers a lot of activities like swimming, picnicking and camping. Besides the pool, there are nearby attractions that one can go to like the Davis Mountains State Park, the Indian Lodge and McDonald Observatory among others.

Those who would like to visit Balmorhea State Park and decide to stay overnight can choose one of the historic rooms at San Solomon Courts.

Balmorhea State Park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s and was opened in 1968.
