i always keep one in my diving bag and use it when i unexpectedly spend time on the surface.. although i really dont like my snorkel, i just take it with me in case i need to use it.

When i do a shore dive and expect a long surface swim, i usually carry my snorkel with me and place it in my belt or on my mask Otherwise, i dont carry one with me. For diving, snorkels are just mere hassles and nothing more! and since most of dives are form boats, i dont really need a snorkel anyway.

i also have one in my bag & i dont use it unless a dive operator tells me to. but personally, i prefer diving on wrecks. and if u do the same, i advise you to never carry a snorkel wit u.

a previous instructor of mine insists that i wear one during rescue classes. so there, i use it when i have to. BUT not during my regular dives, it always seems to get in the way. and bsyds, i dont do much surface swimming. when i used it on my 1st ocean dive, i ended up sucking more water

when i learned to dive years ago, i was taught by my instructor to keep the snorkel tucked under the knife strap on my leg if im not using it. Now i only use it when teaching recreational classes. and i always have it off during wreck diving.

i keep a rolled-up snorkel in my BC & carry the tube in my bag. i can never tell if i might be doing a surface swimming. but other than that, i dont really find it useful haha i never even tried attaching it to my mask for my regular dives.

When diving in lakes and caves, I dont bother taking my snorkel w/ me.. However, i consider it a survival gear if you're in the ocean.. It's also one useful equipment for beach diving.. Good thing i had it with me for few occasions. The ocean's just too big that if u ran out of air, you're a scuba diver no more! Better be safe, right?

i agree with that, take it with you when there is a possibility of a long surface swimming.
but then again, i think it's always a personal choice.

I don't take mine unless asked by the boat operator...come to think of it...they have never asked me to take it.
