There are lots of people who discredit scuba diving as a sport. Why do you think is that? They only think of it as mere hobby, activity, etc.. But do you somehow consider it a sport? What are your opinions?

If you surveyed 100 prospective scuba divers and asked why they are doing it, you would mostly likely get 100 different answers. I personally consider it a great adventure. The only "sport" I could see would be if competition of sorts were involved.

Looking at the definition of the word Sport, I found the following:

sport (spôrt, sprt)
n.
1.
a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
b. A particular form of this activity.
2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
3. An active pastime; recreation.
4.
a. Mockery; jest: He made sport of his own looks.
b. An object of mockery, jest, or play: treated our interests as sport.
c. A joking mood or attitude: She made the remark in sport.
5.
a. One known for the manner of one's acceptance of rules, especially of a game, or of a difficult situation: a poor sport.
b. Informal One who accepts rules or difficult situations well.
c. Informal A pleasant companion: was a real sport during the trip.
6. Informal
a. A person who lives a jolly, extravagant life.
b. A gambler at sporting events.
7. Biology An organism that shows a marked change from the normal type or parent stock, typically as a result of mutation.
8. Maine See summercater. See Regional Note at summercater.
9. Obsolete Amorous dalliance; lovemaking.
v. sport·ed, sport·ing, sports
v.intr.
1. To play or frolic.
2. To joke or trifle.
3. Biology To mutate.

In looking at this, I guess one could consider it somewhat of a sport. I simply look at it as fun.

DEFINITELY! Scuba diving is a sport! Although it is risky (just like any other sport), i'd still not consider it as an extreme sport, but an adventure sport.. It's not done as a competition, but as a recreation!

Scuba diving for me isn't a sport too.. You do not compete and race underwater, right?
Oh, but well. scuba diving is a good form of exercise. With that, i'm positive!

I think life is too short, and we are not coming back. I look at life in general as a wonderful adventure. If I miss a flight, or something one may consider a disaster...I simply smile and think it's all part of the wonderful, exciting adventure we are living. Sport or other. Who cares? Just enjoy.

Thank you scubaman!
It's just that i dont think there's a need for an explanation as to what scuba diving really is, right?
For as long as we all enjoy doing it, nothing else matters!
