Diving Instrumentation
In order to have a safe and enjoyable Scuba Diving experience, there is a list of things you need to know and monitor while underwater. Modern technology makes it possible to determine such information as depth, pressure, and time spent underwater through the use of various instruments such as Depth gauge, Pressure gauge, Dive computer, and underwater Watch. Other tools and instruments such as a Knife and Diving Compass will come in handy. These pieces of Diving Gear and Equipment are very important in dives.
In this section, get familiar with the different instruments needed in Scuba Diving:
Depth gauge
This tool is used to determine the maximum depth reached during the dive. More modern Depth gauges indicate the rate of ascent and descent, so the Diver will be guided and therefore avoiding Barotrauma and other pressure - related conditions.
Pressure gauge
This device is used to determine the amount of air left in the Diving Cylinder (cylinder pressure). This is attached to the high-pressure port of the first stage.
Dive Computers
Also called a Decompression meter, a Dive Computer is an electronic device that is useful in determining important information such as the current depth, Dive time, maximum depth reached, time for no-stop dive, and water temperature. There are also Dive Computers which emit audible warnings to certain situations such as when your rate of ascent is too fast or you have exceeded the maximum Dive depth. Some divers use wrist Nitrox dive computers and some are into other technical scuba computers, depending on their diving specialty courses.

Diving Watch
There are models of Diving Watches which are designed to be used underwater, to depths of up to or more than 200 feet. It is much better if your Diving Watch has a back light so you can still use it at night or in dim light.

Diving Compass
This will come in handy for underwater navigation and when changes in the environment occur that can decrease your visibility, making it hard to find directions.
Knife
While underwater, you can get entangled with Fishing Lines, fishing nets, ropes, and seaweed. You need a Knife to free yourself from stuff like these to avoid being in a dangerous situation. Moreover, you can use the Knife to get the attention of your buddy and other Divers by banging it on a Diving Cylinder in case of problems and emergency.
Except the knife, these are electronic gadgets, and when worse comes to worse, there are possibilities that they will fail. Thus, prior to your dive, check if your tools are working properly. Make the necessary preparation and safety measures so you will have a danger-free Scuba Diving adventure.
