Diving Fins
Fins are important piece of Diving Gear and Equipment. They are fin-like shoes which are usually made of either rubber or plastic. They help Divers in propelling themselves underwater with less effort. In a water sport like Scuba Diving, Fins should have the size and features appropriate to your body.
Types
There are two basic types of Fins: open-heeled and close-heeled.
Open-heeled
This type has an adjustable heel strap to secure it in place. Usually used in colder waters, you need a special boot (bootees) to use this kind of foot - pocket Fins. However, it gives less protection to your feet and the straps can rub against your heels, making you uncomfortable.
Close-heeled
Also called full foot - pocket Fins, this type does not require bootees. In general, this type is cheaper and is very comfortable if you have found the right fit for you. The important thing to consider is the fit. The Fins should neither be too tight nor too loose. Tight Fins can cut off circulation on your feet, while loose ones can easily come off your feet the moment you are in the water. Make sure to have a comfortable fit, where they are snug and you can still wiggle your toes.
There are also Fins termed as Power Fins. The Fin blades have openings or vented slots which make redirecting of water flow more efficient.
Another model of Fins is Force Fins which are smaller in size compared to other types. Similar to a small scale tail of a whale, they provide great kicking efficiency.
Fins are important as far as your movement underwater is concerned, and they vary in sizes, colors, and designs. People may prefer modern Fins with additional features, while some opt the traditional ones. Whatever your preference is, just take into account that comfortable fit is much more important than aesthetic value.
