Buoyancy Compensators

Also called a Buoyancy Control Device , BCD, or BC, Buoyancy Compensator is an important piece of Diving Gear and Equipment. This is used by Divers to stay at a certain depth and to control Buoyancy during descent and ascent.

Features

Buoyancy Compensator
  • Direct feed - Low pressure direct feed, sometimes called power inflator, is attached to the regulator to transfer gas from the Diving Cylinder and Diving Regulator to the BC.

  • Air bladder system - This can either be a single-bladder or a twin-bag. In a single-bladder, the bladder serves as the air container and the cover, while in a twin-bag, it is only the inner bag which holds air. The Diver can add or release air from the bladder in order to achieve good Buoyancy, where the Diver can move underwater more easily.

  • Over pressurization valve - This feature vents the bladders in the event that you over-inflate your BC during ascent.

  • Inflation valve - Through this feature, the gas from the direct feed can be transported to the bladders of your BC.

  • Vent valve - this permits gas to be released from the bladders of your BC.

Types

  • Wings - These are BCDs mounted at the back and to the side which are commonly used by Divers who are into Underwater Photography and Technical Scuba Diving. The Wings are connected to a back plate on to which the Diver is strapped. One of the features of this type of BC is that the air bladder is not on the front part of the body, giving room for other equipment that the Diver may need.

  • Stab Jackets - They are inflatable vests which can give Buoyancy of up to 25 liters. A Diver wears a Stab Jacket around his upper body.

  • Adjustable Buoyancy Life Jackets - These can give 15 liters of Buoyancy. They are cheap and lightweight. The down side is that it is uncomfortable to wear since this type is worn around the neck and is strapped between the legs.

BC Buying Guide

  • Know what type suits you. For beginners, it is advisable to wear Jacket type BCs.
  • You will be wearing your BC for the entire dive so it is best that you have one that gives you a comfortable fit. Also, make sure that you have the right size for your body.
  • Try fitting a fully-inflated BC. In this way, you will be able to check if it does not hinder your breathing.
  • Some models have clips at the shoulders. This feature enables you to take your BC on and off with ease.

Buoyancy Control Devices are very important in Diving, so make sure to know how to use your BC properly and how to take care of it.
