Buddy System
When two divers dive together, they are employing the Buddy System. This is commonly practiced so that they can give assistance to each other, especially in case help or rescue is necessary.
The Buddy System is a safety measure. Buddy checks should be done and Buddies should stick to the plan that has been agreed upon before taking the dive. They should keep an eye on each other at all times so they will know right away if there is something wrong with one of them.
Here are several things and guidelines that buddies should pay attention to in taking a dive:
Before the dive
In the water
- Give the OK signal to your buddy when you are ready to descend. When the other is likewise all set, go down together.
- Remember to monitor each other. Problems will be dealt with right away if you stay close together.
- Coordination is very crucial. Let the other know immediately about any problems or mishaps that you may encounter.
- When you are ready to ascend, give the ascent signal to your Buddy. When he acknowledges it and informs you that he is also ready to go up, slowly ascend together.
In the Buddy System, take responsibility of your buddy. You are expected to keep an eye on the other. Do the Buddy check and adhere to the plan prior to the dive so you will have a successful and safe dive.
